Not all grown-ups can answer the question above. Talking to kids when they are angry or unwilling to follow our instructions can turn into frustration for some parents and teachers; making them talk is sometimes even more difficult.
Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish share their experience in dealing with their three children in a book titled, "How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk". In this book, they give some tips on how to help children deal with their feeling, to engage their cooperation, to encourage their autonomy and also some alternatives for punishment.
I shared the summary of one of the chapters, i.e. Engaging Cooperation in DEAR session on March 4, 2016. The following is the slides I used for sharing.
After the sharing, I asked them to reflect whether they have ever done or said something unpleasant to their kids/students to engage the cooperation, and also the betterment they would do/say if they got a second chance. Here are some of the answers:
