For the last 5 weeks, these students have taken a look at technology developed by past civilizations, touched some of the models in museums then did independent research about technology in the present. Then, can they predict the future technology?

Simple machines have been used even since some old civilizations. To introduce the application of simple machines in the past, I showed this video to my students. While watching the video, they must recognize simple machines used and their function as well.
The students spotted some types of simple machines used to build pyramids in the Ancient Egypt civilization, namely wedges, inclined planes and pulley. They were also able to mention the function of each tool. After they become familiar with the types of simple machines, they observed the school area to find tools that applied simple machines. Some levers in different classes, wheels, what else, kiddos? To give our students experience and knowledge about the development of technology, we did a field trip to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, in Museum of Telecommunication and Museum of Military.
In the first museum, the students got a chance to watch a movie about communication technology developed by Indonesia, including the launching of Palapa Satellite that made Indonesia one of the most modern country in Asia at that time. It was unfortunate that the movie seems not to be updated since decades ago, just like other facilities in the museum. The good thing is that the museum has some dioramas and artifacts of communication tools from the simplest one, like shells of nautilus, and some types of telephone. Technology evolves in a very short time. What becomes sophisticated now might be so out-dated just in 5-10 years later. So does technology that was on-trend a couple of years ago, like analog camera, wired telephone, or coal iron as shown in the pictures above.
As the provocation for UOI 2, students in Grade 5 did CSQ (Claim; Support; Question) activity. |
