On the third week of UOI 1, on 24th August 2015, we watched a movie titled "Forrest Gump". This movie tells the life of Forrest Gump, a man who has low IQ but has a good heart. He got bullied in his childhood as he used bracelet in his legs to help him walk. A girl helped him one day and they became best-friends from that day on. They grew together but started to split as they chose different path of life. It shows some stages of life, from childhood until late adulthood. After watching the movie, the students chose a character and wrote a description of them in terms of role, relation to the rest of the family and society, and the stage of human life cycle they are in. They also share the similarities and differences between the characters. From this activity, the students became aware that everybody experience changes as they grow, including people with low level of intelligence and other limitations. Although Gump is not academically smart, his physical, emotional and social aspect still change. Not only from a movie, we also gave the students exposure to meet a person with disabilities. The following week we invited Habibie Afsyah, an internet marketer who has Muscular Distrophy, a disease that makes his muscles shrink as he grows. From his wheelchair, he shared his story from his childhood when playing Playstation with his friends, difficulties he found during his study in regular schools, until his experience in doing online business. The fact that he is an online gamer makes the students even more excited. At the end of his sharing, he motivated the students to focus on their strengths instead of their weaknesses.
