An article in Parents Indonesia shares a quite shocking information that nowadays, puberty hits girls and boys 6 months to 2 years earlier than a decade ago. This info sends us signal that we need to give knowledge about puberty before they seek it from unreliable sources. It is a good news that in Al-Jabr, this knowledge has been introduced in Grade 5, since the beginning of he semester.
How did we teach it? We want to connect the concept of puberty with their responsibility, in terms of social, self-hygiene and religious matters. So, first of all, we separated the students into two classes; boys were guided by me and Mr Subhan as Islamic teacher and girls with the other Grade 5 teachers.
Then, we gave them two pieces of sticky notes, where they should write things they have known and they want to know about puberty. After that, we played some videos that explains about it in an easy way. While they are watching, they need to be inquirer by finding the answer of their questions. Here is one of the videos we showed:

Some unique statements were written in their notes, such as "Puberty is gross", and "I don't want to get puberty". Some other students wrote questions like, "What should we do if we get puberty?" or "Why my brother get smelly after get puberty?". From those questions and the video, we discussed the responsibilities they hold after hitting puberty, e.g. looking after their self-hygiene and wash their face to avoid pimples. In term of Islamic knowledge, we told them the responsibilities after they become 'aqil baligh', such as taking a junub bath and the obligation to do prayer 5 times a day. By learning these concepts, they understood that puberty is not only about voice cracking and wet dreams, but also that they should be more responsible and independent.
