Nowadays, with the massive use of search engine, people can easily browse with keywords started with "how to...". Even our kids, and we adults, do. Nonetheless, these HowTos are the expected norms of global citizens, starting from how to dress up for formal occasions, until how to communicate with new people. In fact, some cultures have their own set of norms that for others, are peculiar. This is what I want my students understand. For this, I gave them tasks to discover the cultures of Dani people (Papua), Dayak (Kalimantan), Baduy (Banten), Samburu (Kenya), and Padaung (Myanmar). It's surprising them how diverse the cultures are, even for people who live not really far from their hometown, Baduy. As they reported, Baduy is classified into 2 groups, Baduy Dalam and Baduy Luar. Baduy Dalam still really rely on traditional way of living; no electricity, machined vehicles or any colored clothes--just black and white clothes. This exposure, hopefully, can open their mind and help them grow into tolerant person in the future.
